American Express Platinum Card Review
American Express Platinum Card
Is the AMEX platinum card worth the £225 annual fee
The Amex Platinum Card is a nifty little number with no pre-set credit limit and numerous perks for the holder.
For an annual fee of £225 you not only get free international travel insurance for you and your family (for travel paid for with the card) but also can have extra Platinum or Gold cards for yourself and family members over 18.
The rewards scheme is included in the annual fee, and one point is given for each pound spent. Over the course of the year this soon mounts up, and points can be exchanged for a wide range of goods and services, including airline tickets, wine, hotels and car hire.
From time to time, American Express sends Platinum cardholders invitations to prestige events including pre-screenings of new films - absolutely free of charge. There are also Cardholder specials in some of the best stores where only Platinum and Gold cardholders can shop, sometimes with good discounts. Restaurant discounts are also available, as well as free companion airline tickets, and discounts often as high as 25% at other well-known shops and mail order companies.
The fee is high, but if you use the card to pay your telephone bills (home and mobile), your electricity and gas bills, petrol and other day-to-day expenses the reward points soon make up for it.
The telephone help line is excellent; I once had a problem with a store refund, and, unlike other card companies that make you do all the donkey work yourself, American Express telephoned the store concerned and sorted everything out within the hour.
Although there is no pre-set spending limit, Amex do ask that if you are going to make an unusually expensive purchase, i.e. a new car, that you telephone them first to let them know. In doing this you save time at the dealer, as Amex is already expecting the purchase and they have security details already.

Does Platinum give access to airport lounges? pinkies
Amex platinum seems to be a big scam, with different long waits on different answering tapes, higher prices for free tea than for a regular room, and no personal interest or service.
Access to lounge at Paris Nord is not for spouses unless they have their own card.Long delays in reaching your agent. I plan to see if Delta ever provides a first class air france option as advertides. james_quattlebaum
It does give access to the lounges. Spouse, Kids under 21, and I believe two "other" companions are included. eric_holland
'Amex platinum is a great card, worth the money to be able to phone amex if you have a problem and speak to a human being who speaks fluent English. I spend a lot of money online with my Amex mainly work related things like online advertising and hosting, buying these items with my amex platinum card ensures that I get some cashback.
If you have regular online payments to make and your not already using a cashback card, then apply for a platinum today.' alex_amex
I canceled my card for the following reasons:
I do not like to be put on hold when I call platinum service.
No effort at all in trying to find ticket for a preformance.
All "services" are geared towards "sales".
Stuck up service representatives, I am Mr. "so and so"....(I don't even call myself Mr.....)
Tons of other AE Platinum Cards at no fees, Singnature Cards from Visa for way less money.
Special members event are not exclusive, but include casts of thousands. I did not feel like an exclusive memeber. I can get more exclusive just calling a few friends.
The AE Platinum, was created for people that wants prestige. There is no prestige holding the card. I feel like a fool using it, a sucker.
Not worth the money at all. Alex
I like it!
The two-for-one travel deals make it worth it, big style.

The Amex Platinum is a card to be utilized towards time saving, strategically cheap, and comfortable travel. Other Amex cards do not offer the travel, rental, hotel, dining benefits that the Platinum does. The rest is just perk - event invitation, reduced prices on retail, etc. Don't sign up with the Platinum if you're not going to use its key utilities, because you won't make up the difference in cost from discounts. I see a lot of complaining about tentative features... Simple solution - understand what you're getting into. Daniel
