Apple imac G5 Review

Apple imac G5

The Apple Imac G5's Display is the Computer!

Apple designers have managed to squeeze the entire computer into a unit not much larger than a widescreen LCD Monitor. The iMac G5 is suspended from a stylish anodised aluminium stand. The 20inch display has a native resoloution of 1680-by-1050 pixel, and the smaller 17 inch imac G5 uses a resolution of 1440-by-900 pixels by default.

G5 Proccessor

All new imacs contain a 1.6 or 1.8GHz G5 64-bit processor, and all G5 imacs can be fitted with up to 2GB of memory.

Optical Drive

The iMac G5 has an integrated slot loading Superdrive or Combo Drives.

Connectivity

The iMac G5 offers all the right ports to connect to your digital universe with ease. Starting with the new headphone jack that’s also a mini-optical plug. So you can watch DVDs and listen to them in 5.1 surround sound. You’ll also find more than enough USB 2.0 and FireWire connectors for your camera, camcorder, iPod or gamepad. Or if you want to connect your iMac to your TV or a digital projector, the mini-VGA port gives you the option. The line-in jack lets you record an electric guitar into GarageBand. iMac offers Ethernet for wired networking as well as a 56k fax/modem for dial-up Internet.

Wireless Networking

The new imac G5 can be fitter with an AirPort Extreme Card, which provides the freedom of wireless networking up to 50 metres (150 feet) from an AirPort Extreme Base Station or any other wireless ADSL router. Apples new iMac can be purchased with an internal Bluetooth module to wirelessly access many devices that previously required a USB cable. That means you can get an Apple Wireless Keyboard or Apple Wireless Mouse to control your iMac from across the room, or sync your mobile phone address book while your phone is in your handbag, up to 10 metres (30 feet) away.

Imac Graphics

The Apple Imac G5's graphics processor and next-generation high-bandwidth architecture kick 3D games and graphics into high gear, tests showed 3 times the frame rate as the previous iMac in Unreal Tournament 2004.

NVIDIA graphics provides hardware transform and lighting (T&L), per-pixel shading and drop-dead gorgeous effects at high resolutions. The imac G5's NVIDIA video card can deliver over a billion textured pixels per second and an advanced Live FX engine engineered to generate the most lifelike characters. With Quartz Extreme, the graphics processors take over transform and lighting calculation functions from the CPU, freeing the G5 processor to perform essential system tasks faster than ever before.

Apple have produced another winner with the Imac G5, it's a very stylish machine, with performance to match.

Your Comments/Opinions

This isn't a review, more of a statement. What's the screen like, what's the power like, is the 256mb ram enough (no!) could the graphics be better? yes

The apple iMac has got a reputation of being made up of style only. That is so not true, my iMac G5 (only 1.6Ghz) has got some powerful grunt, and I'm not just talking about a couple of spreadsheets and a word document open. I'm talking about professional movie editing and graphics design. I would recommend the iMac G5 not only to proffesional users who need the power it provides, I would also recommend it to any buyer who is in the price range. Congratulations Apple on a wonderfully styly computer with a lot of grunt.
