Creative Labs Modem Blaster V92 External Usb Review

Creative Labs Modem Blaster V92 External Usb

USB External Modem

Modem installed easily and without problems.

In use - modem is virtually useless with AOL 9.0 , including the AOL dialler.

Tried a manual dialup connection with Tiscali - better but still unreliable.

When connected the modem keeps the connection fine but disconnect and you get all sorts of problems and it is virtually impossible to reconnect again without rebooting your machine.

Stick with a serial modem.

Your Comments/Opinions

Forget using this with Linux, as the reviewer said serial hardware modems are best.

Ditto. Installs just fine, connects great, best speed I've ever had on this line. But between 1 second and 30 minutes after going on line, locks up my XP system totally. Have to reboot.

Prelude: I have an ISP with V.92 capability, who has been able to provide 50K+ downloads consistently, on a US Robotics serial modem, with no disruption. Prologue: The Creative Labs Modem Blaster V92 External USB modem is, in the vernacular of the vulgar, a piece of technological, antiquated shit. And I challenge anyone, including Creative Labs, to provide evidence contrary-wise. My claim is a fact, and it is indisputable. This product is garbage supremus! And, until Creative Labs provides customer satisfaction, that is to say, a 100% rebate, all their products should be boycotted. Before my US Robotics serial modem was pronounced deceased, because of a lightning strike, I downloaded at 50K+. I now download at between 23K and 28K. That's the speed I downloaded in 1995 (that's right, my download speed 10 yrs. ago!) Furthermore, the firmware is, along with their hardware, also garbage supremus. Installation automatically enables "Modem On Hold". If you don't have that service, you will never connect. But you'll never discover this gem, until you look at the XP Control Panel. And upgrading the driver, completely disables this modem. Add to this joyous bundle of incapabilities the fact that, “PCM Upstream” does nothing. One can only conclude that, the Blaster firmware was written by cheap labour (i.e. University graduates with no experience). If you want performance, forget PCI and USB based modems - they are software/DSP based, and do not perform. For performance, you need a serial modem. Try US Robotics. Yes it's expensive ~ $120 Canadian, but what's your time worth? Creative Labs is “creative’, in the bill of goods that it sells. “Misrepresentation” should be their motto. Be sure to inform all, by posting at all forums you see fit.
