For the price, it is a good value. However, there is no xp home recovery cd. This is a poor decision from Dell.

Excellent computer for the money. The display is a real surprise and treat. DVD watching is exceptional if you use headphones, the speakers are atrocious. I recieved all CD with mine including recovery. Watch out for sales, can be had for 550.00-599.00US.

Just got one for £349 UK pounds. Delighted, but, like Edwin, no XP CD. Queried with Dell - they advised that they no longer supply recovery CDs - all the recovery info is on the hard drive if it ever needs re-installing. Better remember not to reformat the drive then! Have played DVDs but haven't tested CD writing yet - in view of surf22's failed drive I think I'll test it quickly! Overall though a great laptop at £349 delivered - simply cannot beat this price anywhere.

To get the xp disk that is SUPPOSED to come with your inspiron 1000, call tech support, mention that on the packing slip it says Windows XP Service PAck 1, and that you want the extra 2 gb hard drive space that you are entitled to. The order slip will also say 30 gb hard drive. They put the OS on the 2gb partition which they do not mention when ordering. I had my OS disk in about 2 weeks.

Having not got the computer yet, I can't properly review but after reading the stuff about the recovery XP disk I queried the company I ordered it from over it as I have lost my hard drive before and you NEED that disk to re-install windows if that should happen otherwise you're screwed and have to spend money in order to get a new copy of windows. Will let you know what happens

I BOUGHT MY INSPIRON 1000 IN APRIL AND ITS THE BEST £350 I HAVE SPENT. ITS SPECIFICATION IS SIMILAR TO OTHER MACHINES PRICED AT £499. I AM VERY HAPPY AND WOULD RECCOMMEND IT AS A LOW COST BUDGET BUY. DAFT IDEA NOT TO SUPPLY AN XP RECOVERY DISK. I ORDERED SATURDAY NIGHT AND BY WEDNESDAY MORNING I HAD IT IN MY LAP. THIS WAS AMAZING AS IT WAS BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND. I WILL SHOP AT DELL AGAIN. VERY IMPRESSED.
