Iridium Direct Satellite Internet

Using your computer and an Iridium satellite phone, you can connect to the Internet or a corporate network from virtually anywhere in the world, allowing you to browse the web, send and receive email and transfer files.

You can configure your computer for two different types of data calls, depending on your needs: Satellite Dial-Up Data or Direct Satellite Internet Data.

Now, Iridium Satellite Data Services can be run on a computer using the Windows XP Operating System as well as Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0 and 2000.

Direct Internet Data Service provides connectivity from a PC, through your Iridium satellite phone, directly to the Internet through dedicated servers at the Iridium gateway. This service utilizes transparent compression, resulting in a data rate of up to 10 Kbps, depending on content. (Graphics and images will result in lower throughput.)

Direct Internet Data Service also offers a feature that manages airtime by seamlessly connecting and disconnecting you through the Iridium system when no data is being transferred. This feature, called "spoofing", will reduce airtime charges, improve the phone's battery life, and seamlessly reconnect to the Iridium system if your connection is dropped.

To use Direct Internet Satellite Data Service, you must connect a PC to a data-capable Iridium satellite phone, use a SIM card that is provisioned for data, and install the appropriate software on your computer.

The Iridium phone appears as an external modem to your PC. By initiating a connection through the Direct Internet software, the phone will dial and initiate a connection with the Iridium gateway through the Iridium satellite constellation.

Iridium World Data Services are accessible via data-capable 9500 and 9505 Satellite Portable Phones, the 9570 Portable Dock, and the EuroCom Fixed Mount Unit.
