Like most people, I spent a long time before committing to buying a digital camera. I eventually settled on the DX6490 and have not been disappointed. I have owned this camera now for almost a year. This is a well made, reasonably robust and easy to use camera. The degree of control over image settings is vast, or you can use it as a point-and-shoot camera. Either way, the controls are intuitive and you don’t need to refer to the manual (electronic format only) very often. The USB 2.0 connection ensures rapid transfer of files to your PC and, so far, I haven’t lost any images. 4.2 M pixels may not be cutting edge now, but is more than ample, unless you’re printing posters. I’ve printed out to A4 and the images are perfect. Colour in particular is impressive. The large LCD screen (2.2”) is very bright and clear and lets you view photos as you’re taking them – you can zoom in x2 or x4 so you can check the image is in focus etc. Both the LCD screen and the electronic viewfinder show precisely what you’re photographing, so you don’t have to worry about chopped off heads etc when you print out. I understand that this is not always the case with digital cameras – eg the Fuji S5000. The x10 optical zoom is superb, but you need good bright light or a tripod/steady hand at full zoom. The lens size does mean that the camera isn’t really pocket size, but the advantages of the camera outweigh it’s relative bulk. The video capability is relatively low resolution, but it records sound clearly. On a PC monitor, it looks a bit blocky, but on a normal TV it’s not too bad and certainly watchable. The camera also lets you review video and has a in-built speaker which re-produces sound very clearly. Battery life is very good – one battery lasts normally a week of holiday shooting, reviewing etc . The battery also charges very quickly – probably under 2 hours, though I did buy another one at a cost of £12 or so. The internal memory is a handy ‘reserve tank’ for when your card gets full. I bought a 256Mb card which allows approx. 220 images at best resolution or 16 minutes of video. Only negative points are;- i) Compression is not variable. I’ve only noticed artefacts on one image which contained a relatively uniform sky – otherwise this doesn’t seem to be a major problem. ii) Image exposure, on auto setting, seems to be slightly overexposed, though this is subjective. You can tweak the exposure down a bit if required. iii) Between shots, the view finder/LCD back screen goes blank, so if you’re using the multiple shot setting you have to point the camera and hope.mark_tate
