Nokia E61 Smartphone Review
Nokia E61 Smartphone
The Nokia E61 is an attractive device overall, with an all-silver casing that makes it appropriate for the business set.The Nokia E61 has a slim profile and a full QWERTY keyboard, in fact the Nokia E61 bears more than a striking resemblance to the Motorola Q Smartphone and aksi BlackBerry 8700 series.
The Nokia E61 keyboard buttons are large enough and you wont have any problems composing emails, quick notes or SMS messages. The E61 keys are adequately backlit for typing in dark rooms.
The Nokia E61 has robust e-mail capabilities with support for Microsoft Exchange Server, POP3, IMAP, and SMTP accounts, and a full attachment viewer. You can get real-time message delivery through a number of push e-mail solutions, including Intellisync Wireless E-mail, BlackBerry Connect, GoodLink, Visto, and Seven Always-On Mail. A small LED above the screen, as well as a pop-up box, alert you to new messages.
There's also a mobile VPN client so that you can securely tap into a corporate server. The E61 also works with popular instant-messaging clients, such as Yahoo and AOL, and is text and multimedia message capable.
The Nokia E61 is rated for seven hours of talk time, and we had no problem reaching that claim. Standby time for the E61 is rated for up to 11 days.
Nokia has decided to keep the E61 as a business phone and opted out to include a digital camera component. Although in the future perhaps it would be wise to at least include a video-calling lens in the front for 3G calling, which the symbian OS already supports.
Overall I love this phone. it is beautiful, super slim, easy to read and comfortable to talk into and type. I have had it for over a week and it blows the Palm Treo 650 away.

Has anyone managed to use the Nokia E61 with SKYPE or any other VOIP service? The Nokia E61 has got WIFI but do the UK networks prevent you from using this for VOIP calls?Andy P
Voice quality on the Nokie E61 is much better than my blackberry 7100t. The E61 seems to get a signal in places that the blackbery didnt. The nokia has a really good speakerphone was - loud and clear. I use the Nokia E61 as my speakerphone for conference calls since it sounds as good as the landline phone on my desk. With the E61 it is easy to set up multi way conference calls. Much easier than having to set up conference bridges, and I believe is the most robust conference calling feature of any smartphone. I travel to around the USA and Europe frequently, so this quad band GSM smartphone is ideal. The Nokia E61 has excellent battery life, as I have come to expect from Nokia products.Lennon
There are instructions on the SIPGATE.CO.UK website for using the nokia e61 with their VOIP service. I have not been able to get VOIP to work, I get a message on the E61 saying service unavailable. I have tried disabling the firewall on my belkin wireless router but I am still without a VOIP service. I can browse the web and check emails using the belkin router as an access point, does anyone have any ideas how to get VOIP working over my WIFI connection?Zoe
I have a Nokia E-61 and really have a problem with the softphone because it has no NAT translation. I have had it working on Vonage, but it is hard to setup and you have to set it up manually for each wireless network that you use. I have tried to use voip on 3 different wi-fi routers (linksys, netgear and dlink). Its a shame that the E61 does not seem to support stun. The E61 doesn't have a great sniffer built in and it is just too much work configuring it for each router. The rest of the E61 is great, It's the best mobile/pda that I have ever owned. It syncs with my PC and my Apple Ibook which is a first! Got a really good deal on my E61 from Vodafone.John
The Nokia E61 is hopeless as an email/calendar support while on the move - a good phone but no hope of easy synchronisation.Gary
The Nokia E61 is not among the most powerful business phones nor does it fare well in the department of synchronization, my E61 often crashes when syncing. The Nokia E61 comes with lots of handy utilities, attention to detail, good battery life and a compact form factor, and you end up with a very solid business phone contender indeed.JOHN
If you want OTA sync for your calendar and contacts, take a look at www.zyb.com. This will also work with any other handset that supports SyncML and it works if you're using a Wireless Lan or Access Point also.Anthony
