Trustix Secure Linux Review
Trustix Secure Linux
Linux available in commercial and open source versions
Trustix Linux OS is a security hardened, server optimized Linux distribution. All the trustix ackages have been specifically chosen to maximize the security, performance and stability of corporate servers. It has no running services which may compromise security or denigrate system performance, features strong encryption and is capable of heavy duty multitasking. Trustix Linux OS is easy to deploy and manage and is fully scaleable to the needs of your business.
Trustix linux is available in several versions, you can get support options from the commercial version at www.trustix.com or try the GPL open source version available for download from www.trustix.org.
I've been using the open source version for 2 months now as a web/database server. Security is obviously taken very seriously and your going to have to know how to set up a system from the command line. There is a simple installation routine, and it was the only linux distro that installed correctly first time on my HP Netserver, recognising and configuring the 6 SCSI hard drives and RAID interface. After completing the installation routine you'll need to configure apache and mysql to start at boot up by hand.
Apparently the commercial version does have some graphical configuration programs, but as I've now got my apache server and mysql configured I don't think I'll be bothering with it.
Your Comments/Opinions
Using the trustix is a great way to learn how linux works, install it on an old machine with no monitor, and SSH into it from your PC, you'll learn loads just setting it up with apache/php/mysql Paul Johnson
I agree with the previous comment, if you want to learn linux trustix is a great starting point, but you may get more support from the slackware community (slackware is also pretty secure!) Marco
I tried TSL a while ago and was quite impressed with the installation and packages on offer. I also liked the 'everything off' by default approach. No ports open here. However, I found support harder to come by. I'm a Slackware user - there's a massive Tom Satinet
I'm not a geek and I keep getting a popup called a TSL installer, I've heard it's called a "trojan horse," repeatedly in the middle of the screen, making it difficult to work. It says that something is 0% loaded. Can you help me get rid of this headache or do I just need Tylanol? Bob bob4@earthlink.net
bob sounds like he is using windows. non-bob
Like Bob, I'm a Windows user. I noticed 2 icons on the bottom right screen saying TSL Installer 100%, then all sort of strange things started happening. What is it and how can I get rid of it? No, I didn't click on anything - the icons just appeared. @!X*?*^! Patty
Like tom says Trustix lacks support, I've used slackware in the past and it's very well supported but I've decided to make the switch to BSD. Just fancied a change, I installed NetBSD and im pretty impressed. Martin
