Lol, it's August 2008 and I'm gunna assume that no one has posted in this forum for a few years now, but I found it here just now, so I figured I'd contribute :-). I've had my 5160 for nearly 4 years now. I have an extended warranty that will expire in October and I have taken FULL advantage of it :-). I've had technicians out several time, my heat sink has been replaced twice, keyboard once, power supply once, lcd once, several pieces of plastic fixed, and motherboard once, most of that in the past 2 months. The computer runs really hot, everyone knows that, but for a reference point, my CPU was varying between 170 and 180 farenheit, that's right around 80 celcius, I've burned myself not with the computer in my lap, but simply from typing. I had the lcd replaced because there was an image literally burned into the pixels. The overheating makes it almost impossible to watch videos or listen to music, although the battery life already makes watching movies impossible without being plugged in. When it is cool however, it really is a great PC. I have an antec fan base (my 3rd), and each time the heatsink has been replaced it has remained cool for several months. It plays WoW, albeit on the lowest settings at an acceptable fps, and zips around quite satisfactorily for only having 512mb of RAM. If I were to go back 4 years, I definitely wouldn't buy this one again, but it's not the worst PC ever, and it certainly has treated me well, even if Dell customer service is an absolute nightmare.

wow, i thought i was alone in this shity laptop problems. The second i press the power button, the fan comes ON FOR NO REASON! IT STAYS SOOOOOO LOUD THAT ITS UNBEARABLE. I had to bring this laptop to school for 1 day since i needed the computer and everyone else had macbooks. My macbook was coming soon, like a month. So i plug in the charger so my laptop doesn't die, and when the teacher says, "SILENCE!" Everyone is quit and macbooks aren't nearly as loud. The room was quiet sept for MY INSPIRON 5160. I am a PC fan and every1 else was a Mac fan. The loud fan ruined my rep since people thought PCs suck and everyone was laughing when my fan was so loud. :( Just bought a 2gz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook running leopard pre-installed. It runs smoothly and is GRRREEAAT!! Here is my reccommandation. By a mac and install windows on it using boot Camp. Mac has great hardware but the PC department has the GRREEAAATT OS know as WIndows. Any way, back to the *** laptop. IT IS SOO LOUD AND SOOO HOT! It burns my skin and nearly like killed my "manhood" if ya know what i mean LAWL! But i m serious. My parents won't get me a new computer since i just got 2 new macs, the aluminum imac and the macbook. I reccommend HP laptops. I was browsing their site and they had relatively cheap prices. THE BEST THING TO DO IS BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER. BUT THATS SO HARD :(. Go youtube and look for a video on recycling your laptop. It features the Inspiron 5150 and it shows how to reuse some parts of your Inspiron so its not all of a loss. :(

what a piece of ***, the 5160 is the first and last laptop i will ever buy from dell.Ive had this silver convector heater for 2 years. My laptop overheats and runs slower than the amstrad464 that i had when i was a kid. Dell has admitted the design of this laptop is faulty yet they take no responsibility for the fault. NEVER NEVER EVER AGAIN DELL

Have a 5160. Total Crap. Anyone thinking of buying DELL beware. You'll soon be calling India (Customer Service) and banging your head on your wall.

Shuts off ...overheats..plug won't work (adapter) total crap. Have a 5100 dell...nice machine....5160 isn't heavy enough for a decent boat anchor. Could be used for discus practice. First annual dell toss??

First and last Dell I will ever buy. It's functionality is ok, but the fan noise from day one has been unbearable! Makes it almost impossible to do work. Never again.

I have constant tinitus from my jet engined fan! Second motherboard, would never recommend another Dell product in this lifetime
Crowbie () 1.5 / 5 Thu 15 Nov 07
Issues: The Intel Mobile P4 3.2 GHz processor, whilst appearing formidable on paper, was never designed for use in a notebook. It runs very hot and this is exacebated by the ridiculously undersized, stupidly placed fan on the underside of the notebook. The NVIDIA GeForce FX vid card is crap and slow. This unit is notoriously bad at multitasking. I regularly have to use compressed air to clean the vents to minimise overheating.
Boostar () 5.0 / 5 Fri 2 Nov 07
I have an Inspiron 5150. It's almost 4 years old now and was one of the last Dell sold.. I never had any problems. I just use a can of compressed air to clean the fan every once in a while and I'm running BIOS A35. With this version the fan is running all the time, what keeps the notebook cool.

My aunt purchased the Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop a few years ago, was one of the best at the time. The laptop crashed and then got rebuilt and so it was handed on to me because my aunt had already bought a new laptop. A few months after i recieved it, the charger kept on falling out of the charger hole, leaving me to find something to wedge it in with. It then came to a point where i had to stand the laptop on its side to wedge the charger cable in, so i let it charger for a few hours and everytime i moved the laptop, the charger would stop charging. It has now been 18 months approx since i used the laptop because the charger stopped working completely. I got blamed for it at the time, but now i have read this i know there are other people with exactly the same problem. I have never had the motherboard replaced as i didn't know that was the problem, but it did shut itself down quite alot due to overheating. The fan used to be so loud even when on a desk. The laptop burnt my leg even when resting on top of a magazine or paper. Complete waste of time!!!

Dell if you put out something that has know propblem you deserve this!!! I think a class action suit should be started!!!! Kathy

The only consolation is that lots of other people have had the same problem with the 5160 DC jack socket/ AC port. Don't think I'm even going to think about contacting Dell.

My Inspiron laptop makes noise, overheat, changed the battery charger three times in three years, and the charging connection is weak. I paid $1800 for this lapTop. Dell were not responsive to my concerns and I am fed up with them. I hope they come to their senses and start to serve customer and take responsibility for their defected products. farhan39@aol.com

I've had this laptop for a couple of years now. Performance-wise for a laptop it is pretty impressive but as other people have said, the cooling system is atrocious! Playing any games or running a DVD over a resenable preiod of time and the whole system starts to lag or just generally complain of overheating. Fine for doing work that doesn't require too much CPU activity but otherwise look to other laptops.
Jeremy_Network Admin () 1.0 / 5 Mon 28 May 07
Whoever designed this notebook must've been a jet engine enthusiast! If this notebook had wings, I'd bet it could FLY! I've tested over 120 different models/brands of notebook computers, and I've never ever heard a fan run this hard and this loud. Superior qualities: Hyperthreading, Good sized screen, larger capacity HD, quality processor, dvd burner available. Atrocious qualities: Heavy as a load of bricks, overly thick, poor construction/design, SCREAMING Fan, HOT HOT HOT processor, inadequate USB ports in comparison to the same price point in other notebooks, stock screen graphics are at substandard levels, no option of floppy with wireless network card, poorly anchored/drilled onboard A/C power adapter plug. This was not a well-designed notebook from Dell by any means. As someone has mentioned, Dell has taken some wrong turns in the past few years, and it appears that they have considerably dropped in quality in recent times. Common issues that are unresolved is inexcusable by ANY company of reputation. Reputation does not seem to be what Dell is interested in anymore. My best suggestion, would be to check out a public/consumer site like epinions.com or consumerreports.com to see what consumers are saying rate the best long-term use notebooks out there. You CAN'T go wrong when you've got a collective opinion to go by (like this site). Beware of corporate 'storytellers' who say "My computer is FREE of issues, and has NO problems whatsoever". Yes, some companies DO sink to these levels. Good luck!

Dude.... I am never getting another Dell! I have spent thousands of dollars with them on computers and components. The MB on my 5160 has crapped out and they want $435 to replace something that is just a few months out of warranty. Good riddance Dell.

5160 is rubbish- worst laptop I have ever had ( all the others are Dell). Overheats, load fan, too hot to sit on lap, broke after one year 1 month and as out of warranty very expensive for a years use.

I haven't had many problems. Replaced CD drive, Motherboard, Hard drive, Battery Pack. Only the battery pack is dell. The replacement parts are all other makes and now its brilliant. Just hope you're willing to spend about £300 on repairs and upgrades.
Lisa, I'm stupid, bo () 5.0 / 5 Sun 11 Mar 07
All of the same MB issues as above. Should have know after I purchased in Oct.'04 and the LCD bulb needed to be replaced in Dec. '04 that I should have just returned. Attempted to buy new power cord after it officially died in Nov. '06...that lasted 2 months. $1500 for crap. Oh, and don't ever apply and use their credit card. It's rape.
Pete () 0.5 / 5 Thu 8 Feb 07
Same problem as above - after 18 months I started to experience problems charging the battery. Eventually would not charge or run off mains power at all. Have now been told I'll need a new motherboard at a cost of almost £300. I notice that Dell are now repairing these model laptops for free in the US and Holland (and soon Canada) thanks to some lawsuits filed against them for knowingly selling defective items. Any chance of this happening in the UK any time soon?

I have had my Inspiron 5160 for almost two years and it's been hell from day one. Had to re-install everything...drivers and windows for starters and spend hours on the phone to Dell support. The laptop was just making this loud noise and the word cable was blinking on the screen. It was also asking for drive A, which is a floppy drive that doesn't even exsist on the computer. It is as loud as a plane engine and I wouldn't take it anywhere. Have never heard such a loud laptop in my life and it's been like that since the start. Dell won't have it back though. It's also painfully slow and won't run multiple software at the same time, so it's useless for my website designs as I need to work in Photoshop, Flash and Dreamweaver at the same time. Just don't buy a Dell people!

After 3 trips to the repair depot I have decided to give up on my 5160. I really like the machine until it started not working. Motherboard has been replaced 3xs and 1 new video card. First time after repair it lasted 1 month, next time it lasted 2 weeks and now, 2 days! I can't have a computer I can't rely on. My son is happy, cause I'm going to give it to him as an extra gaming computer, so it won't matter if it dies again. I'll just keep sending it back to Dell as long as it is on THEIR DIME! This will be the last Dell I purchase! Very disappointed in the quality and their attitude!!

bought mine 2 yrs. ago. LAN card went first (after about 13 months), sound card second, and today my cddvd drive died. i'll go out tomorrow and buy my 3rd external device. can't wait for the motherboard to go - I'LL FINALLY BE RID OF THIS CRAPTASTIC MACHINE. and i'll never buy another dell, that's for sure...
chris () 0.5 / 5 Wed 13 Dec 06
apparently, the whole inspiron 51xx series has major motherboard issues. my 5160 won't recognize the AC adapter anymore and dell says it will cost $500 to replace the motherboard. there's a class action lawsuit in the works right now that would give us all a new 1 year warranty for the most common problems.

OK where do I start, Everybody says by a dell, Isay you gotta be outta you f________ mind. Bought a 5160 10/2004 and 11/2005 yea thats right 3 days out of warranty you guest it the mother board crapped out, on hold with dell he said he name was BOB, right more like HABEB anyway out of warranty means out of warranty. Dell will not budge no price breaks remember they are a business and the business needs to make money so they install faulty mother boards to the tune of $438.00 Yup what was Ito do had to have it new om=ne installed 01/2006. Everything great thanks dell. O WAIT the 2nd board failed 8 months later another new board $438.00. Final words Dell SUCKS customer service sucks they suck

I have had this laptop for a year now with the same overheating issues in terms of the fan running always and being extremely loud. Finally, my boyfriend checked the system Bios, and found two things that I did not need to take advantage of which may have been causing the computer to be in a "high performance" / hot state causing the fan to run all the time. A) We turned off SpeedStep and B)left hyperthreading on, now fan barely runs and it feels much more calm, cool and stable.
Carol () 0.5 / 5 Wed 30 Aug 06
Does anyone know what the actual problem is with the motherboard? My 5150 has stopped recognising the power adapter and now had dead battery too...I've already tried a new adapter and new power jack, but they've not solved the problem.
Ross () 0.5 / 5 Thu 24 Aug 06
Extremely loud fan. I can hear it from the other room. I can hardly take it to class, because I can't hear my teacher over it. Very heavy, not all that attractive, and after about a month the AC Adapter went out on me. Worthless. It looks like a lot of these reviews report the same exact flaws. Hey Dell, recall?!

I am having the problem with the fan it sounds like itis going to take off and it shuts off it always happens when i am at something important too and just before i save it so i loose it all, this has been happening for about 3 months, other than that it has been a good laptop!!

I have this 5160 for over 20 months now and except it making a huge noice i have no specific problem. Once i had the problem with fan as it was blocked bcoz of dust so it could not be started and i had to sent it to dell and they had to replace the fan and since then its working fine!! Can any one give me a real good reason why dell inspiron 5160 making such a huge noice and is there any problem that i can expect in the near future?
Mark () 1.0 / 5 Wed 9 Aug 06
On my third motherboard since my USB ports blew out both times. The computer was on a static free surface. I suspect poor static shielding in the products design. If you buy a dell buy the longest extened warranty you can buy.
k () 5.0 / 5 Tue 8 Aug 06
bad press not limited to the above, seems the mother board problem is apparent in too many models! ie inspiron 3800, dimension range etc and guess what ,they'll fix it for a magic £300+! I agree with all of the above. DONT buy DELL
Gary, Surry, UK () 5.0 / 5 Thu 3 Aug 06
Have the 5160 for just over a year after the warranty (how convenient!!), The ac jack gave away. Dell did not want to know! I'm sure it is a design fault. The shear weight of the ac connector is just too much for the little ac jack to bear! The whole machine is a write off. Never ever will buy another Dell. They are just lots of rubbish!!! Stay away from this company! They are more interested in contract sales which can afford to replace machines on a yearly basis...Dell machines are not built to be reliable, otherwise how can they make any money out of you eh???
J nelson () 5.0 / 5 Mon 31 Jul 06
Had a 5100 that continually overheated to be replaced by a 5160. It took Dell 1 month to come out and fix the problem. Now the 5160 has had overheating problems that seemed to have damaged the processor. I called Dell 3 months ago, they said my warranty expired. I called again to complain and apparantly my warranty had been in effect for 2.5 additional months. Dell refuses to help me. Kiss my a$$ Dell. So much for Customer Care.

On 5160 number 3 after the first two died. It is heavy and the fan runs continuously. The power jack falls out of the back. If you want a good Dell look at their Latitude line. I have since moved to a D610 and it is the best Laptop I have used, light and powerful with a good battery. Don't buy inspiron's.
Robert G W () 5.0 / 5 Sun 2 Jul 06
I have had my 5160 for a year and a half with absolutely NO problems. I use it daily for hours and hours. People, the problem with this computer is the Intel Mobile Pentium 4 processor which runs much hotter than the Intel Pentium M processor which is a low wattage product that is designed specifically for notebooks. It is frequently used with the Centrino chip sets and notebooks. The Intel Mobil Pentium 4 with HT (or without) is a really poor design which as we all know runs about as hot as a out of control nuclear reactor. AMD, Power PC, Motorolla and even other Intel chips like the celeron the celeron M the Pentium M and the new Core Duo run MUCH cooler. Dell should never have used this chip, it sucks juice like mad and wastes it giving off heat as a byproduct. As for the power supplies, you can get them on Ebay for like $20.00. Keyboards are like $19.00 . Tons of parts availabled on Ebay. I accidently picked up my laptop by the lids edge (it weighs 8 pounds) and cracked the glass on the LCD. I didn't call DELL?! I loged on to ebay with another PC and purchased one for $150 bucks and installed it my self with a small phillips screwdriver. Stop bitching and educate yourselves before you buy something (anything) and treat expensive electronics like they are expensive electronics. P.S. they have the DC charging jacks for the motherboard you guys keep breaking somehow (sheesh) for $32.00 bucks for the repair kit on (you guessed it) Ebay. Again, it's not Dell, It's "INTEL INSIDE" and the way you (and I)treat your equipment. Next Time, I will buy an AMD Processor, They are faster anyway!!!

Do not buy a laptop from DELL, ever! This company is ripping people off. Really wish I had read this page before I bought mine 18 months ago. Sent it back to Dell for motherboard repair, it came back faulty, 4 graphics card replacements as they just do not work properly, now out of warranty and I've got a decision to make - extend the warranty for a further year or buy a new one - Hmmm... a new laptop/desktop is in order - and definately not a Dell... they are laughing all the way to the bank with this one... Also - I've had pneumatic drills that were quieter...

Had my 5160 for a year and half and it still runs like the day it was new. Use it every day for applications, web, and movies. Use it for travel about once a month. The excessive heat and noise are the only complaints I have. I run the battery dead every few months then recharge it just for maintenance. I get almost 3 hours out of it.

Dell Inspiron 5160 Got A 5160 for Christmas one and a half years ago. When i first got it i found immediatly the cd drive had broken down. It had to get fixed. Reading some of these, I found many motherboards needed replacing. Its a rip off!!! Instead I took it to a good shop and got it fixed instead of getting it replaced. WHY CANT THEY JUST FIX THE PROBLEM!!! no doubt that it is a good laptop but it makes a loud noise and sometimes just crashes for no particular reason! Overall if you want the laptop for performance, it it alright, but for mobility and speed, NEVER.

I have had the Inspriron 5160 laptop for about year and a half. I have had the motherboard replaced 5 times now. I have had excellent customer service and the last 2 times the computer was out of warranty and they replaced the motherboard for free and had a one day turn around. I have alway spoke with an american when calling. I just got the new Dell 964 all in one printer. This printer sucks. They won't take it back so that is $200.00+ I threw in the trash can. The printer shows that there is no ink even when you replace them with new ones from dell. I have called about the problem and have alway spoke with someone other then american with a name like, Joe, Sue, John, Betty. Please. LOL.. anyway I went to walmart and brought a little $49.00 printer that works very will with good printing output and every time I need some Ink I throw the whole printer in the trash or give it to the goodwell and buy another at $49.00 Cheaper then the Ink that goes in it plus I always have a new printer LOL.. I must say that I have brought atleast 6 computers from dell 2 Desktop and 4 notebooks. I have had 3 printers from dell. Lets just say that I WAS an dell freak. But I now must say bye to dell and hope they wake up before ending up like gateway did when they thought they owned the world. I will check out gateway again and other american made computers. But I must say that dell will no longer get my business. If you plan to buy this laptop be ready for a lot of down time. LOTS of down time. And for those who have not had any trouble either give it time it will come. or You have great luck. Which I belive the later is not true after all it is a dell.

Ran into several problems here and there and then after 14 months real problems. Wish I had extended warranty beyond 12 months. Power Supply didn't work properly and they say it needs a new mother board! It's dead! Rip off because we paid a premium for this beast!

Dell 5160 is an excuse for a laptop. This was a total scam! The engineering design of this laptop is wrong and Dell still sold it to quite alot of people, knowing they will go back soon to either replace some parts or buy another. Motherboard dies quickly because of the overheating of the laptop which is absolutely crazy. Mine overheats so much it turns itself off in the middle of my work. This was the worst laptop ever. Just if you do decided to change your laptop, try a Sony VAIO, they are the best. So smooth, no noise and super fast.

'Same problem with 5160. Just out of warantee and can't get power, or battery to charge. Dell say mother board has gone, and will have to pay for new one. They say that they aren't aware of any problems with this machine. Perhaps they should open their eyes. They must be losing loads of customers if the noticeboards are anything to go by., so won't replace unless pay '

Does anyone know if you can put another motherboard in with a different chip and fan to make it run cooler? I've got no problem with the unit [apart from being heavy] and had an AC adaptor replaced next day by Dell - very good service - but the noise is a pain. I keep apologising for it and my colleagues keep looking at me with pained expressions. It's nearly a year old - sounds like the motherboards fail around 15 months. I don't think I should wait that long!

'Bought a 5160 about 15 months ago. It was a great machine until it stopped charging from the DC adapter (which, as you all know, means the motherboard is hosed). I just got a custom fix from a company in NY for $200 or so -- they've done a *lot* of these fixes.'

'same as irfan. Motherboard fault after 15 months..took an hour to tell me this. Only difference they told me no point repairing it, buy a new one which would be much faster, and obviously my daughter had got lots of use out of it so why was I complaining? Told it would cost about £360 - £400 to repair but never even had the courtesy to contact me with a quote. After much searching their site, message said service not continued. Worst buy ever!'

'I have been Dell fan for last 7 years. 15 months ago I bought Inspiron 5160 and was happy with it despite the heavy sound which never calms down. Few days back suddenly the battery discharged while the power cord was still connected and I suspected that the power supply is faulty. Tried varius things but the laptop wound start for few seconds displaying the message that it cannot recognise the power supply. Now after reading the messages all over the web I am devastated as I can not get to my data on this laptop and do not want to spend £350 on this brick fearing it will happen again. I have already started saying never and never Dell again and have started looking at other brands like Sony.'

'Been using this for a year and 1 month, just ran out of the bloody warranty. I HATE THE LAPTOP BECAUSE THE NOISE JUST BUGS THE HELL OUT OF EVERYBODY! My laptop is in a different room and I am in a different room and I can still hear it! That's how bad this is! They put a fan on the hyperthreading processor but never did on anything else. It SLOWS DOWN when it heats up, so the fan has to continuously run like a maniac. Oh and if you want to take it ANYWHERE, EVEN IN A PARK OR A RALLY BE READY TO GET FROWNED BECAUSE OF THE BLOOD NOISE!!!'

'its a real good laptop performance wise, but heats up wayyyyyy too much, had to replace the motherboard twice, as well as AC adaptor, had to get the keybaord replaced once, still has overheating problems, and the fan randomly speeds up, and creates too much noise. The laptop is great, but dell need to do something about the overheating problems. Get the dell warranty, but otherwise its a good laptop for performance. '

'If you are looking for a portable, quite notebook to use during class/meetings...go with something else. It is somewhat heavy and makes quite a substantial amount of noise (from the CPU fan). If you do not care for it's weight or noise, then the 5160 is perfect. I have never had any problems with it. Its display is very crisp at high resolutions. It runs quite efficiently. All my applications and games run fine. A USB 2.0 hub for $20 will solve your lack of USB ports problem. It is a great replacement for a desktop computer, but not really meant for portability. The biggest issue: The fan noise can be quite distracting. I'd recommend replacing the fan, or finding another solution to cooling the CPU'

'Yet another aggrieved Inspiron 5160 customer with the power jack problem for 11 months. Seemingly a sound machine, but the adapter used to basically cuts out after an hour of charging. Then 5 days ago it stopped charging at all and the laptop just ran out of juice. Mine is just inside warranty, but a tiny drinks spillage on the keyboard has led to Dell claiming this is the problem. Even though I had power supply problems way before and the laptop functioned for months afterwards. They sent me a picture of the spillage which bizarrely enough was tiny and only landed on the casing of the PCMCIA slot, and showed a pristine motherboard (around the metal casing). They quoted me £350 + VAT for a new motherboard. I confronted them with the problem of faulty jacks that they had "never encountered before" and they said "we are returning the laptop to you unrepaired - goodbye". '

'Motherboard problems on this laptop seem to be caused by CPU heat and flexing of the AC power cord lug which causes the jack to break from the MB. There ARE places that can fix the BTW without replacing the motherboard, but here is a helpful tip. Make sure your 5150/5160 is using BIOS A35 or lower. The newer ones above this run the fan less frequently and at lower speeds. the CPU overheating issues result, as do overheated MB and eventually some people have the jack issue. Run the earlier BIOS and the CPU will run cooler...don't flex the jack and you'll have a fantastic laptop for a long time. It is easily to accidentally flex the power cord jack by lifting the laptop up in to front to slide it closer. This will certainly result in problems! Good luck! I have 2 of these for almost 2 years now and they are excellent. Far better than by VAIO or Toshiba crap that NEVER EVER EVER worked for more than 30 minutes at a time. Dell is idiotic for the bios issue...but you don't have to be. If your MB died, and Dell is being a hassle, check here http://www.aqstech.com/5150pj.html'

'Within first year the disc drive broke (and was replaced), and had many problems with overheating and shutting down by itself. Then the power adaptor broke (and was replaced) but now has broken again out of warranty. A very noisy computer and I will definitely not touch Dell with a barge pole again. Bizarely, I bought a Tiny PC about 2 weeks before the company disappeared and was the butt of many jokes. This has not even frozen or crashed once!'

'My 5160 just turned 13 months old. What a piece of junk. It won't charge, power cord falls out of back. Spent one and a half hours on the phone with a moron who now tells me that i need to spend $300 for a new motherboard. This is ridiculous. Dell told me that they have never had this problem with the 5160 before. It was new to them, what a shocker. The fan is so loud you can't even think when you are on it. My daughter couldn't even take it to her classes because of the noise. I will never ever purchase a Dell product again! Some of the keys are even falling off. One month after the warranty runs out, what a joke. I thought this was suppose to be a reputable company. I am taking my business elsewhere.'

Just after my warrenty expired, the Ac port broke. I can no longer able to charge my notebook. What a waste of $1500. This is my worst investment ever. Dell should take responsibility and fix this defect even though it is off warrenty.

Had 5160 just over a year and have just learnt that all the problems I have suffered over the last couple of months have accumulated in fact that the motherboard now needs replacing! What a rip off, Dell are laughing all the way to the bank! Wish I had read this page before I bought it!

I've had the computer one year and only recently had a problem when the clip holding the Alt Gr key broke. Long telephone call to somewhere in India to try to get a fix but was told that keyboards under the warrenty are only covered for six months (no mention of this antwhere in my warrenty). They couldn't supply me with the plastic clip (putting them into the keyboard housing is a very easy task)only a complete keyboard. The machine is fine for what I need but the after sales service is rubbish. I will not be dealing with Dell again.

It has a major motherboard problem. If you have one just wait a few more months or days and it will fail.
Katie () 1.0 / 5 Tue 6 Dec 05
Had the Laptop for a year, already it's having to be replaced. It's insanely loud, extremely hot (overheats often), and has reached the point of shutting itself off due to excessive heat even when simply sitting on a desk (this occured on average 10 times a day -causing me to lose many important documants unexpectantly). Call Dell, and used the express service code on the bottom of th laptop, and waited no longer than 20 minutes. They're replacing it with a new 5160, but it doesn't seem like an isolated problem... i guess i'll have to wait and see. BEst advice i can give: if you're goning to risk this purchase, be willing to dish out the $$ for the complete care and accidental damage warrenty for as long as you can afford.

Great laptop, until it went wrong. Motherboard needs replacing, but, despite having collect and return warranty, I can't get Dell to do anything about it. They were very good running through possible problems, but, since they decided it was the motherboard, it has been impossible to get any answers, like when are you going to collect it, how long will it take, and I take it you aren't planning on charging me! Great laptop ruined by what seems to be a very common motherboard problem, and awful service!

I started with a 5150 and am now on my 4th computer from Dell because the others continued to break. I to have had my mother-board replaced once and 2 Graphics cards have needed exchanging on my 5160. I must admit that the 5160 is much more stable than its predecessor the 5150. I had to have 3 new 5150 sent to me as replacements or spend hours with tech support to get them running. I recommend to all that you buy the in home and premium coverage “it will pay for itself”. Overall I find the 5160 to be a good Desktop replacement

The only thing I didn't fancy about this laptop was the lack of USB ports, however a 7 point USB 2 hub sorted any problems. It runs two printers, a scanner, a DVD-RW drive, and external HD, and a broadband modem, with no complaints. Much faster than my GX260 desktop setup, graphics are more than adequate for a laptop. I like it!

its good up to a point however the thing is incredibly noisy ive had desktops that were quiter!! if ur sitting taking notes in a conferance prepare to get frowned on for carrying this beast its just so loud!! did i mention its loud? ive seen that in some other places its because dell dont put adequate cooling on the processer and therfore the fan screams at all times but im in warrenty and i wont risk adding more myself

isn't the 5160 supposed to be SILVER?? or did i misunderstand.. cause it's still the old dirty grey.. also: i had to reinstall everything on the computer and spend 3 hours with Dell technical support during the first week.. seems like there's lots of small problems with the computer still..

Had the Inspiron 5160 for about 9 months. Good computer. Very fast and runs every game and application I have tried up to date. Only problem about this notebook is that is is pretty loud. Depending on the temperature the fan is usually on. Sometimes if its cold in my room, the fan won't even turn on.

Have 5160 dell and it is a lemon the newest problem is when turned on it makes noise and goes off and on. windows loads normally, so I suspect the fan going

The 5160 is my 4th laptop and is consistently the best of the whole lot. It can be noisy when it is hot, but I would rather hear the fan knowing it is cooling my beast than to have it burn up like the Challenger. Hyper-Threading Tech and highspeed 802.11g are fantastic pluses.

Poor Computer, Even Poorer Service We purchased our Dell Inspiron 5160 less than six months ago. For the last two weeks we have been unable to use the system as it requires a new motherboard. We purchased a warranty with the computer that guaranteed us that any repairs to the computer would be carried out within 24 hours. Two weeks later and we are still waiting. Take the time to look online at the many customer complaints about Dell Customer Service and Technical Support. Revealing to note that Dell UK/Ireland has no customer complaints telephone line. If you purchase a Dell Inspiron 5160, prepare to spend your quality time trying to right their wrongs. You have been warned...
