Dell PowerEdge 650 Review
Dell PowerEdge 650
The PowerEdge 650 is a low-cost, single processor, general purpose 1U server targeted to address the needs of price-sensitive users of rack dense servers. The Dell PowerEdge 650 brings new levels of performance, expandability, serviceability, and deployment flexibility to lowcost, single processor general-purpose (GP) rack systems, including anIntel Pentium 4processor, support for IDE or SCSI hard drives (including optional RAIDsupport), support for optional remotemanagement, and a toolless chassis.
The Dell PowerEdge 650 is designed to address the needs of small and
medium-sized organizations, cost-sensitive data center customers,
and service providers that must deploy multiple integrated servers in
a minimum amount of space at the lowest possible cost.
• The PowerEdge 650 is a general-purpose (GP) rack-dense 1U (1.75-
inch) server that brings new levels of performance, expandability,
serviceability, and deployment flexibility to a 1P/1U server, and
includes: support for the latest Pentium 4 processors; up to two IDE or
SCSI hard drives (including optional RAID support); up to 3GB of
RAM (4GB RTS+); choice of NIC options; tool-less chassis; and
optional remote management support.
• The PowerEdge 650 is ideally suited for edge of network applications
(low-end web hosting/caching), network infrastructure applications
(domain controllers, DNS, DHCP), and single function applications
(video streaming). Its feature set also makes it attractive for use as a
rack mountable client/developmental server.
Choosing Between the PE650 and PE1750
The PowerEdge 1750 will offer several key performance, expandability,
scalability, and availability features that differentiate it from the PowerEdge
650. Specifically, the PowerEdge 1750 will support dual Xeon™ processors,
hot-plug redundant power, an additional hard drive, hot-plug hard drives,
more memory, an embedded RAID option, and higher performance PCI
slots. These performance, scalability, and availability features will help
position the PowerEdge 1750 as the server of choice for more processor and
memory intensive applications that require higher levels of availability. The
PowerEdge 650, with a single processor and focus on low cost, is better
suited for edge-of-network, network infrastructure, and single function
applications.
